Wird der Euro den Dollar verdrängen ?

Seit Beginn des Tourismus auf den Malediven waren amerikanische Dollars die wichtigsten Devisen. Unsere Konjunktur war auf die Dollars, die wir bekamen, sehr angewiesen. Mit der Einführung der gemeinsamen europäischen Währung, des Euros wird sich nun vieles ändern, nicht nur auf den Malediven, sondern auch in vielen Ländern der Welt.

Von Anfang an kommen die meisten Touristen aus Europa und nur wenige aus Amerika, so dass wir als Devisen wahrscheinlich mehr Euros, als Dollars bekommen werden. "Die meisten unserer Touristen sind aus Europa und da wir den Euro als eine Währung akzeptieren, von Touristen, die den Euro als ihr Geld bringen werden" sagte Abdul Gafoor, der maledivische Finanz-Behörde (MMA). Gafoor sagte, dass der Euro auch von allen so geschätzt werden wird, wie der US-Dollar. Diese würde dann die Genehmigungen beinhalten, den Euro in allen Devisenbüros und in allen Läden, die in der Lage sind Geld zu tauschen, auch Euros getauscht werden.

Je nach Umlauf des Euro planen die Banken bereits, Pläne dafür, genau so viel Kredite in Euro zu vergeben, wie sie bisher in Dollar vergeben haben. Dies würde natürlich auch zur Eröffnung von Euro-Konten führen. Der stellvertretender Manager der Bank der Malediven, Herrn Mohamed Ahmed, mutmaßte sogar, dass der Euro die häufigste und beliebtste Währung auf den Malediven werden könnte. Er sagte auch, dass zusätzlich zu den Euros der Touristen, auch viele Geschäftsleute Euros von Ihren Geschäften in Bangkok, Singapur usw. verwenden werden. "Größere Exporteure aus Singapur und Thailand zu den Malediven würden auch Euros akzeptieren, und, wenn unsere Geschäftsleute leicht Euros bekommen, werden sie diese auch sicher verwenden", sagte Mr. Mohamed Ahmed. Er sagte auch, dass der Euro eine, für maledivische Brieftaschen freundliche Währung werden würde. Weiters verkündete er, dass dass die Bank der Malediven bereits jetzt jene technischen Erfordernisse jetzt in Eurowährung hat, die notwendig waren, um Konten zu eröffnen und zu bedienen.

Ende Dezember 2001 hatten die MMA und jene vier Banken, die auf den Malediven arbeiteten, ein eintägiges Seminar, um Geschäften und Kunden Auskünfte über den Euro zu liefern. Der Wechselkurs für Euro ist MRf 11,299 für einen Euro. Der Wechselkurs für den Dollar beträgt MRf und die Kursrate 1,551, daher ist der Euro stärker als der US-Dollar in Vergleich zum maledivischen Rufiya.

Auf vielen Inseln wird der Euro bereits akzeptiert, doch die Kurse entsprachen nicht immer den aktuellen Wechselkursen: Statt des offiziellen Wechelkurses erhält man in vielen Hotels um etwa 10 Prozent weniger. Manche europäischen Tauchbasen tauschen da manchmal etwas günstiger. Am Sichersten ist nach wie vor die Bezahlung mit einee internationalen Kreditkarte, wie Visa, oder ähnliche.

Will the Euro replace the US Dollar ?

Since the introduction of tourism to the Maldives, about 25 to 30 years ago, the dominant foreign currency in the Maldives has been the American dollar. The term dollar became synonymous with foreign currency and our economy became heavily reliant on the amount of dollars that we got. With the introduction of the common European currency, Euro, on 01 January of this year, this is set to change - not only in the Maldives, but in many countries throughout the world.

The dominance of the US Dollar is about to get its first major challenge. There have been foreign currencies such as the British pound and the Maltese lira and many other currencies that were and are stronger in exchange rate than the dollar but none of those currencies had the grip that the US Dollar have had over the economies of the world. The Euro is set to become the first credible challenge for the dollar. Starting from 01 January 2002, the Euro currency has been declared as the official currency of 12 European countries. According to some financial experts, this would bring new challenges to the US Dollar.

Since Maldives is largely dependent on tourism for our foreign currency, and since a large majority of our tourists are from Europe, and because we get very few tourists from America, we are likely to get more Euros as foreign currency than dollars in the coming years.

"Most of our tourists are from Europe and since we accept Euro as a currency, those tourists would bring their money as Euro," said Abdul Gafoor, the General Manager of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). Gafoor said that the Euro too would get all the special preferences that the US Dollar gets. These would include the permits for all foreign exchange bureaus and shops to be able to exchange Euros too.

Depending on the circulation of Euros the local banks have plans to give all the services for Euros that they have been giving for US Dollars. These would include the opening of accounts in Euros. Assistant General Manager of the Bank of Maldives, Mohamed Ahmed predicts that after Maldivian Rufiya, Euro would become the most widely used and popular currency in the Maldives. He said that in addition to the Euros that most of our tourists would be bringing here, our businessmen are likely to use Euros in their business transaction with Bangkok, Singapore, etc.

"Major exporters to the Maldives, such as Singapore and Thailand would also accept Euros and if our businessmen could easily get Euros they are more likely to use Euros in their transactions," said Mohamed Ahmed. He said that Euro would become a friendly currency to the Maldivian wallets in the future; and revealed that the Bank of Maldives now has the technical requirements necessary to open and operate accounts in Euro currency.

Already in May 2002 many islands accepted the Euro, but the courses didn't always correspond to the current exchange rates: The exchange rate is only 90 percent instead of 0.93. You can also pay at the airport with the Euro (only bills), but attention, here the conversion rate is really only 80 percent for but respect: 1 euro = o, 8 dollars !!!

Late December 2001, MMA and the four banks operating in the Maldives had a one-day seminar to provide information to businesses and customers about the Euro. The exchange rate for Euro is MRf 11.299 for one Euro. This is MRf 1.551 less than the rate for US dollars. Hence Euro is stronger than US dollar in comparison to the Maldivian Rufiya.

The euro is already accepted on many islands but the course didn't always correspond to the current exchange rates: Instead of the official exchange rate you gets in many hotels e.g. 10 percent less. Some European diving bases swap a little more favorably sometimes there. The safest payment still is with an international credit card, like VISA, or similar.
